LIDAR surveying for the 3D scale model in the city museum STAM, Ghent.

One of the highlights of the permanent exhibition in the city museum of Ghent, is the model of the old town, at a scale of 1/1000. The three-dimensional model was produced based on laser scanning data (LIDAR) obtained from a helicopter. Vansteelandt was responsible for the scanning campaign, using the Fli-Map system of Fugro Airborne Mapping. Vansteelandt also provided for the necessary ground control points and the preparation of the datasets (point cloud) for 3D modeling.

Besides the illustrative value in the STAM museum, thanks to its high level detail and spatial accuracy, the digital 3D model can be used for applications in all kinds of domains, such as urban planning, environmental studies, building designs, intervention plans etc.
